Chelsea's Boss Maresca Labels Pre-Match Time as His 'Toughest Two Days' with the Club
Chelsea gaffer Enzo Maresca stated that the build-up to the weekend's triumph against Everton was "the most challenging 48 hours" he has experienced at Stamford Bridge.
The 44-year-old offered a puzzling comment in his after-game interview despite earning a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge thanks to finishes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.
Those crucial points sent Chelsea back into the English top flight's top four, potentially lightening the atmosphere following a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had extended the side's drought without a win to four fixtures.
Yet, when questioned about the full-back's contribution and general performance, Maresca surprisingly divulged his annoyance over the previous two days within the club.
"How the players are eager to learn has been superb and this is the reason why I commend them - because with so many challenges, they are excelling after a tricky week," he stated.
"Since I joined the club, the last 48 hours have been the toughest because many people withheld support from us."
When pushed further on the specifics, the ex- Leicester City boss continued: "Worst 48 hours since I came to the club because people didn't support me and the team."
When questioned if he was referring to people internally at Chelsea, he responded: "Broadly speaking. Overall," before clarifying when queried if it was aimed at fans or the press: "I adore the fans and we are very pleased with the fans."
Fitness and Suspension Crisis
Maresca also drew attention to Chelsea's ongoing injury and suspension issues, noting they had been missing key forward Cole Palmer for much of the season, as well as losing key midfielder Moises Caicedo to a three-game ban and forward Liam Delap to two significant injuries.
"I really praise the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, 5 of them minus Moises Caicedo, eleven of them without Cole Palmer, nearly every one of them minus Liam Delap," he explained.
"And this squad, regardless of who is playing, they are performing brilliantly. Today was five games in 12 days so certainly when you see Cole Palmer available, we have said many times that he's our best player but we play the vast majority of the season minus our top player.
"We play five games in the Premier League without Moises Caicedo. This is the explanation why I'm so pleased for the players and it's something that I would want people outside to acknowledge because the work from the players is outstanding."
Chelsea's triumph over Everton strengthened their standing in 4th place in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup last-eight clash at Cardiff and a league trip to Newcastle scheduled in the coming days.
Speculation Over Maresca's Remark
It was ambiguous what exactly prompted Maresca to describe the past 48 hours as the worst of his tenure as Chelsea head coach.
In that window, the Italian had returned with his staff and players from Bergamo, conducted a training session at Cobham, attended a pre-match press briefing where he seemed relaxed, and engineered a win over an high-flying Everton side.
It was hard to discern whether any particular media reports had unsettled him, if social media comments played a role, or if it was something deeper from inside the club at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca only sought to rule out that it was an issue involving the club's fans, some of whom have still have yet to fully warm to him since his arrival from Leicester in July last year.
