Democrats Left Weakened After Record-Breaking Shutdown Yields Minimal Concessions
In the wake of 43 consecutive days, the longest US government shutdown in history has reached its conclusion.
Public sector staff will start receiving pay anew. National Parks will return to normal. Public services that had been reduced or fully stopped will restart. Air travel, which had become a nightmare for numerous citizens, will revert to being simply annoying.
What Has Been Accomplished?
Once the situation calms and the approval from the President's endorsement on the budget measure dries, what has this historic shutdown achieved? And what price was paid?
Democratic senators, through their use of the legislative delaying tactic, were able to trigger the shutdown although they constituted a smaller group in the senate by declining to support a GOP proposal to provide short-term financing for the government.
The Minority Stand
They created a firm boundary, demanding that the Republicans agree to extend healthcare financial support for financially struggling individuals that are set to expire at the year's conclusion.
After several opposition legislators broke ranks to support reopening the government on recently, they gained very little in compensation – an assurance of legislative action in the Senate on the support payments, but no guarantees of Republican support or even mandatory consent in the House of Representatives.
Internal Conflict
Following this development, members of the liberal faction have been furious.
They have charged Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer – who declined to support the funding bill – of being covertly participating in the reopening plan or merely ineffective. They've felt like their party folded even after off-year election success showed they had the upper hand. They feared that the stoppage consequences had been in vain.
Even more centrist party figures, like the Governor of California Gavin Newsom, described the closure agreement "inadequate" and "capitulation".
"I'm not coming in to criticize people harshly," he stated to the news organization, "but I'm not pleased that, in the face of this invasive species that is the Republican figure, who's completely changed political norms, that we're still playing by conventional approaches."
Tactical Ramifications
Newsom has future White House aspirations and can be a reliable indicator for the sentiment of the political organization. Previously he had been a consistent backer of the current administration who showed up to support the then-president even after his poor debate showing against his opponent.
If he is running for more aggressive tactics, it isn't a favorable development for the opposition's leadership.
Republican Reaction
Regarding the former president, in the time after the Senate deadlock resolved on the weekend, his mood has shifted from measured hopefulness to victory.
On Tuesday, he congratulated congressional Republicans and labeled the approval to restart the government "a significant triumph".
"We are resuming the United States," he stated at a military holiday observance at the military burial ground. "The shutdown shouldn't have occurred."
The Republican leader, possibly detecting the opposition frustration toward the Senate leader, joined the pile-on during a television appearance on Monday night.
"He assumed he might divide the GOP, and his opponents broke him," the former president stated of the opposition legislator.
Looking Ahead
While on occasion when the president looked like yielding – previously he berated GOP senators for rejecting the removal of the senate obstruction procedure to end the shutdown – he eventually came out from the stoppage having made little in the way of significant agreements.
Although his approval ratings have dropped over the past month, there's still a year before GOP members have to confront constituents in the midterms. And, unless there is basic governmental alteration, Trump doesn't need to concern himself with facing voters subsequently.
Governmental Next Steps
With the end of the shutdown, the legislative branch will get back to its standard governmental operations. Although the House of Representatives has effectively been on ice for several weeks, GOP members still believe they might enact some substantive legislation before the forthcoming electoral season begins.
Despite multiple public institutions will be financed until late summer in the shutdown-ending agreement, lawmakers will have to approve spending for the rest of the government by the end of January to prevent further stoppage.
Persistent Issues
The opposition party, recovering from defeat, could be desiring further attempts to confront.
At the same time, the issue they fought over – healthcare subsidies – might turn into a critical matter for many millions of U.S. citizens who will face coverage expenses substantially increase at the end of the year. The majority party ignore addressing such constituent hardship at their own political peril.
Additionally, this constitutes not the only peril confronting the Republican leader and the majority party. A day that was expected to focus on the legislative financing decision was spent dwelling on the latest revelations concerning the deceased criminal Jeffrey Epstein.
Other Complications
Later on Wednesday, Congresswoman Adelita Grijalva was sworn in to her congressional seat and became the last required endorser on a petition that will force the House of Representatives to hold a vote instructing the government legal system to release entire records on the Epstein case.
It was enough to lead the Republican to protest, on his social media platform, that his financial resolution achievement was being diminished.
"The minority group are seeking to reintroduce the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax anew because they'll do anything possible to divert attention from how badly they've done
