Heat and Portland Trail Blazers Earn First Wins After Recent Arrests
Miami scored eighty-six opening half scores versus the Memphis Grizzlies
Miami Heat earned a overwhelming 146 to 114 win against the Memphis Grizzlies in their first NBA match since player Terry Rozier was arrested over alleged unlawful sports betting.
Trail Blazers coach Billups was also detained in connection with a sweeping FBI investigation into sports betting. Both men contest the claims.
But, the Heat were not distracted as they recorded eighty-six first-half scores to be ahead of Memphis by thirty-nine at halftime, the biggest halftime lead in the team's 37-year history.
Bam Adebayo top-scored with twenty-four points and afterwards stated Rozier had the support of the team.
"We stand behind him. Complete backing," Adebayo said. "You support him through and through. He's like family ultimately."
Miami head coach Spoelstra commented: "Terry is somebody who is important to all of us. He has made a real positive impact on our team.
"We send our thoughts and support for him as he goes through the situation."
The Trail Blazers also secured their first game since the arrests, with Brazil-born Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Chauncey's non-attendance and guiding the squad to a decisive 139-119 win over the Golden State Warriors.
"We all had great experiences with Billups and how he coached," Splitter said. "Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones but we have a job to do."
League Commissioner Adam Silver 'Disturbed' over Arrests
Speaking about the arrests for the initial occasion, league head Adam Silver said he was "very upset" by the events of the recent days.
"There's nothing more important to the league and supporters than the fairness of the game," he informed Amazon Prime. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."
Silver also mentioned an NBA investigation into Rozier's actions in spring 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he participated for the Charlotte Hornets versus the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"We were informed by the regulators and the betting companies," he added.
"We then looked into that situation and were open about it. Although there was the unusual wagering, we, honestly, found no evidence.
"The federal government has subpoena power... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the league office is unable to.
"Therefore, we've been cooperating since then. And, of course, what they announced recently was an charge.
"And two and a half years after, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in justice to Rozier.
"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise here between protecting people's rights and conducting an inquiry."
