Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

At least 16 individuals were killed and more than 40 sustained injuries when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were taken to the hospital.

The deceased have not yet been formally identified, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She recounted the events before the shooting, explaining they were standing when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
