Manchester United Set to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.
A Major Signing for the WSL Side
The forward, with half a year remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee signing for the WSL side.
Her exit from Munich has been anticipated after she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top forwards. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.
Reliable Goalscoring to Boost the Attack
The experienced striker's signing should represent a significant uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
Securing the German international coincides with a period when United seem to be building positive momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen further business:
- The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a senior figure stated: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
