New York Unveils Online Platform for Citizens to Share ICE Videos After Arrests of 4 American Citizens
The state AG has rolled out a fresh reporting form urging locals to submit photos and videos of ICE operations around New York. This move follows a day after a significant ICE raid disrupted NYC's Chinatown, sparking large-scale protests.
US Citizens Arrested In Raid
A congressional representative revealed during a midweek briefing that four US citizens were taken into custody and held for "nearly 24 hours" after the enforcement action. Demonstrations broke out in NYC on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
"Every New Yorker is entitled to exist without intimidation," the attorney general wrote in a announcement.
"If you witnessed and documented ICE activity during the raid, I encourage you to share that footage with us. We are dedicated to assessing these accounts and investigating any violations of law."
Portal Features
The platform includes spaces to send visual evidence of the raid, as well as a section to indicate geographic details. Before submitting, submitters must mark a checkbox that acknowledges that "authorities might employ any materials, images, or footage in a public document, such as in a lawsuit or government document."
Information about the Chinatown Raid
The enforcement action, which witnesses say involved over fifty government officers, took place in a well-known area of NYC where fake handbags, accessories, jewelry and merchandise are commonly traded en masse – often to visitors.
Footage of the incident reveal several hooded and equipped officers securing and holding a person, and forcing aside bystanders. Crowds of residents pursued the officers along the roads. An military-style transport was also seen rolling through the urban roads.
Leadership Statements
During a news conference held with the rights organization, Representative Goldman, a lawmaker, announced that four US citizens were taken by federal agents for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where four American citizens should be arrested for without cause." He noted the citizens were let go on Wednesday with no legal action taken.
"The goal is evident here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," he remarked. "This constitutes a military-style operation to provoke unrest. It is simply a excuse to incite violence for the government to bring in the military to stop conflict that they initiated."
Widespread Condemnation
Fury over the immigration operation escalated – each of the NYC mayor hopefuls criticized the incident, as did the state leader.
"Repeatedly, the Trump administration opts for authoritarian theatrics that generate terror, not safety. It needs to cease," one mayoral candidate declared.
The city's community groups spoke out too.
"Immigration agents raided the neighborhood with military-style vehicles, masked agents and tactical gear to target small merchants trying to make a living. This operation had no relation to public safety and was entirely about intimidating residents and communities," remarked the leader of a rights organization.
Agency Rules
ICE policy bans the holding of citizens and the bureau has stated it refrains from take into custody US citizens. Nevertheless, independent reporting has discovered that over 170 US citizens have been detained unlawfully by immigration authorities since the beginning of the present government.
Recent Pattern
Immigration operations have been cropping up increasingly in New York and across the US lately.
A mid-October raid in central NYC was the earliest reported action on an immigrant shelter of the existing leadership. Demonstrations opposing immigration enforcement are commonplace as are accusations of aggression and abusive practices.
Most recently, a submission provided by advocacy organizations alleged healthcare failures of pregnant women in detention centers.
