The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Campy Joy – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Cynical Way to Sanitize Conflict.

A recent acronym surfaced several months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it stands for “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, per insights from health professionals like child health specialists. Normally, it is uncommon for physicians to attend to a young patient who has seen the death of their whole family. But, there has been nothing “normal” about the genocide in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been obliterated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal in many doctors coming back from a devastated terrain with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.

A Living Nightmare Despite a Reported Truce

The Gaza Strip continues to be a profound humanitarian disaster. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and groups like Amnesty International have stated that genocidal acts are still being committed. Authorities has denied these allegations, consistent with how it disavows each claim it is charged with. But while grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in makeshift tent camps, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its professed goal of “unity and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to roll out a prestigious stage for Israel, despite the fact that a number of European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Since this, we are told, is what unity looks like.

Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from participating in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza seems completely different.

A Selective Vision

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was accused of questionable voting tactics last year in what could be seen as an bid to politicise Eurovision. Forget the fact that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have surged. Overlook the situation that international journalists are still prevented from freely reporting in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Amidst Unimaginable Suffering

The contest marks seven decades next year – almost double the current lifespan of a person in Gaza today. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it once represented. An institution that initially championed harmony has devolved into a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
