The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror That Blends Survival Horror and Among Us Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of intriguing future games, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.

"This is a unique experience where a girl harboring several personalities within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four separate souls, all possessing unique anxieties and motivations. These entities can seize control at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.

Based on showcased gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie hospital, though other scenes show the main character exploring a abandoned church.

A World of Personal Horror

"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that appear minor to others can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are unique to every individual."

The core gameplay loop revolves around managing the persona that emerges at any given time. However, these souls will switch against your will during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's fears become amplified and assault the protagonist in succession. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player experiences.

Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Decision

Initially, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the lobby have large flowers where their necks should be. Flowers are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four souls asserts that the body is rightfully them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."

Once players believes a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, because each soul can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The last one standing could be a fake. Either way, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on platforms.
