The Japanese Economic Output Contracts as Overseas Sales Suffer by American Tariffs

Japan's economy has shown a contraction for the first time in a year and a half, largely caused by weakening exports because of recent US tariffs.

G7 Growth Rankings

Japan stands as the initial G7 economy to report an output shrinkage in the previous quarter.

As the United States still needing to release its gross domestic product figures for Q3 2025, the current G7 economic rankings show:

  • The French economy: 0.5 percent expansion
  • UK: 0.1 percent
  • Canada: 0.1 percent (provisional estimate)
  • Germany: 0%
  • Italy: no growth
  • Japan: -0.4%

Travel Stocks Decline amid Diplomatic Rift with Beijing

Alongside the economic contraction, Japan is dealing with an growing political dispute with China regarding Taiwan.

Shares in Japanese travel and consumer businesses have dropped significantly after China recommended its citizens to refrain from visiting to Japan.

This decision by Chinese authorities heightened a political dispute that was initiated by remarks from Japan's recently appointed prime minister about the possibility of sending forces in the event of a potential Chinese invasion on Taiwan.

The situation caused a wave of selling across Japan's leisure shares.

  • The Tokyo Disneyland operator shares fell by 5.7%
  • Isetan Mitsukoshi tumbled by 11.3 percent
  • The national carrier fell by 3.75 percent

"The ongoing dispute over Taiwan and Beijing's advisory discouraging visits to Japan brings near-term difficulties for consumer-facing sectors.

"Tourists from China account for roughly 25 percent of Japan's inbound traffic, making retail outlets, high-end shopping, and tourism services particularly at risk."

GDP Contraction Details

Japanese GDP fell by 0.4 percent in the July-September quarter, as manufacturers' exports were affected by duties levied by the US recently.

Overseas shipments were a primary driver of the decline, dropping by 1.2 percent compared with the April-June quarter, and were 4.5% lower than a the same period last year.

Earlier this year, the US administration had threatened Japan with a additional 25% tariff on its products, which was later lowered to 15 percent when the two countries concluded a trade agreement.

Private demand also declined, by 0.3 percent compared to the previous quarter.

On an annual basis, Japan's real gross domestic product contracted by 1.8% in the three months through September.

"The Japanese economic situation was solid in the initial six months of this year and today's GDP data showed that growth is paused temporarily.

I anticipate Japan's economy to be back on a moderate recovery trend going forward."

The US administration has lately acknowledged the impact of tariffs on Americans, lowering tariffs on imported food products including meat, produce, beverages and fruits amid increasing concerns about increasing costs.
