The White Sox Sign Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on a Lucrative Two-Year Agreement.
In a significant move for their overhauling roster, the Chicago White Sox have welcomed slugger Munetaka Murakami, completing a two-year contract with the power-hitting player.
Financial Terms and Added Benefits
The deal includes a seven-figure signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, in addition to annual pay of $16M for the 2026 season and $17 million for the following year.
Additionally, Murakami's 2027 salary is subject to escalators based on accolade achievements in 2026:
- An additional $1M for earning the MVP award.
- Half a million dollars for placing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
- $250,000 for ranking fourth through 10th.
- $250,000 for winning the top rookie honor.
The agreement also stipulates that he cannot be sent to the minors without his permission and allows him to become a free agent at the conclusion of the deal. Further benefits include a club-supplied interpreter and travel costs between Japan and the U.S..
Posting Fee and Franchise History
As part of the transaction, Chicago is obligated to provide a posting fee of $6,575,000 to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's professional league. The Yakult organization get a additional payment of fifteen percent triggered incentive payments.
