Three Lions Coach Explains His Vision: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.
In the past, Anthony Barry was playing at a lower division club. Today, he's dedicated on helping the England manager claim the World Cup trophy next summer. The road from the pitch to the sidelines commenced through volunteering with the youth team. Barry reflects, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and it captivated him. He discovered his destiny.
Staggering Ascent
His advancement has been remarkable. Beginning with his first major job, he established a standing with creative training and strong interpersonal abilities. His roles at clubs led him to top European clubs, plus he took on coaching jobs abroad with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached stars like Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Today, as part of Team England, he's fully immersed, the “pinnacle” as he describes it.
“Everything starts with a dream … Yet I'm convinced that dedication shifts obstacles. You have the dream but then you bring it down: ‘What's the process, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ Our goal is the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. It's essential to develop a structured plan so we can to maximize our opportunities.”
Obsession with Details
Passion, focusing on tiny aspects, is central to his philosophy. Toiling around the clock day and night, the coaching duo challenge limits. Their strategies include mental assessments, a strategy for high temperatures for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and fostering teamwork. Barry emphasizes “Team England” and rejects terms like “international break”.
“This isn't a vacation or a rest,” Barry says. “We needed to create an environment that attracts the squad and where they're challenged that it’s a breather.”
Ambitious Trainers
The assistant coach says and Tuchel as “very greedy”. “We aim to control every aspect of the game,” Barry affirms. “We strive to own the entire field and we dedicate most of our time to. It’s our job to not only anticipate with developments but to surpass them and set new standards. It’s a constant process with a mindset of solving issues. And to simplify complexity.
“There are 50 days alongside the squad prior to the World Cup. We must implement an intricate approach for a tactical edge and explain it thoroughly in that period. We need to progress from thought to data to understanding to action.
“To develop a process for effective use during the limited time, we must utilize the whole 500 we’ll have had from when we started. When the squad is away, we need to foster connections among them. We must dedicate moments on the phone with them, we have to see them in stadiums, understand them, connect with them. Relying only on those 50 days, it's impossible.”
World Cup Qualifiers
He is getting ready for the final pair for the World Cup preliminaries – against Serbia at Wembley and away to Albania. The team has secured a spot in the tournament after six consecutive victories without conceding a goal. However, they won't relax; instead. Now is the moment to strengthen the squad's character, to maintain progress.
“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the style of play should represent everything that is good from the top division,” he comments. “The fitness, the versatility, the strength, the honesty. The national team shirt should be harder than ever to get but light to wear. It ought to be like a superhero's cape instead of heavy armour.
“To ensure it's effortless, we need to provide an approach that enables them to operate like they do every week, that feels natural and encourages attacking play. They should overthink less and increase execution.
“You can gain psychological edges for managers in the first and final thirds – building from the defense, pressing from the front. Yet, in the central zone in that part of the ground, we believe play has stagnated, particularly in the Premier League. All teams are well-prepared now. They know how to set up – mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are really trying to increase tempo in that central area.”
Passion for Progress
The coach's thirst for development knows no bounds. During his education for the top coaching badge, he was worried regarding the final talk, since his group featured big names like Lampard and Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he went into the most challenging environments he could find to improve his talks. One was HMP Walton in Liverpool, and he trained detainees in a football drill.
Barry graduated in 2020 at the top of the class, and his research paper – focusing on set-pieces, where he studied 16,154 throw-ins – was published. Lampard included won over and he brought Barry as part of his backroom at Stamford Bridge. After Lampard's dismissal, it said plenty that the team dismissed nearly all assistants but not Barry.
The next manager at Stamford Bridge was Tuchel, within months, they claimed the Champions League. After Tuchel's exit, the coach continued in the setup. Once Tuchel resurfaced with Bayern, he recruited Barry of Chelsea to rejoin him. The Football Association view them as a partnership like previous management pairs.
